"He had been what was called a faithful husband; and when May had suddenly died-carried off by the infectious pneumonia through which she had nursed their youngest child-he had honestly mourned her."
I am really happy that Newland Archer had been a faithful husband to May and not cheated on her with Ellen Olenska, because that would've made me feel really said for May. She didn't do anything wrong or unfaithful towards Newland Archer, and I believe he should treat her the exact same way. I am sad that May died from pneumonia, because now her children don't have a mother anymore, and that must be very painful for them.

"Then he remembered that the Reggie Chiverses, whose house was a few doors above, were taking a large party that evening to see Adelaide Neilson in Romeo and Juliet, and guessed that the two were of the number."
This reminds me of the time in my life when we read Romeo and Juliet in my freshman year of high school. Romeo and Juliet couldn't be together just like Archer and Ellen Olenska can't be together. However, the reason Romeo and Juliet couldn't be together is because their two families are enemies and don't approve of their relationship, whereas the reason Newland Archer and Ellen Olenska can't be together is because Archer is married to Ellen's cousin, May Welland.

"What if it were she who was dead! If she were going to die-to die soon-and leave him free!"
I think that this idea is completely horrible and I can't believe Newland Archer would even think that. If he is thinking about his wife, May, dying just so that he can be free to be with Ellen Olenska, then I don't think he deserves to be with her. I think this shows that he is selfish, because I think any person who would picture someone else dead for their own happiness only cares about their self. Newland needs to think about May's life and happiness as well, not just his own.

" 'But you are the woman I would have married if it had been possible for either of us.' "
I really don't like this idea, because Newland is basically saying May is his second choice for a wife. I don't believe that Newland should be marrying May whenever there is someone else he'd rather be with, because it's not fair to May and she deserves to know the truth. I think that Newland needs to cancel the marriage now because it's a mistake, and he shouldn't be marrying someone who's not his first choice.

" 'I'm not sure if I do understand,' she said. 'Is it-is it because you're not certain of continuing to care for me?' "
I agree that May Welland should be suspicious of Newland Archer asking her again to marry him sooner. I think that he is definitely starting to think about Ellen Olenska more, and therefore, wants to rush his marriage to May, hoping that this will cause his feelings for Ellen to disappear. Instead of trying to get May to marry him sooner, I think that Newland should be thinking about if he really wants to be with her, because I don't think he for sure wants to.

" 'I think that's for her to decide.' "
I completely agree with Newland Archer. I believe that Ellen Olenska should be able to decide herself if she wants to get a divorce or not, regardless of what her family or anyone else thinks. It's her life and she might want to see other people, so she should get a divorce if she wants to. I think it's ridiculous that people are going to try to convince her to stay married, because it's not their life, and therefore, not their decision.

" 'And she ought to know that a man who's just engaged doesn't spend his time calling on married women.' "
I definitely agree with Newland Archer. I think it's ridiculous that Countess Olenska would even suggest Archer calling on her, much less right in front of his fiancee. Also, his fiancee, May Welland, happens to be her cousin, which makes what she did even worse. If I were May Welland, I would not be very happy with what my cousin did, because it was wrong and rude.
